The Secret Sauce: Hybrid AI That Converts

Matt Leitz:
Hey, welcome to a very special installment of BotBuilders Basics. In this training, we’re sharing a bit of our secret sauce—the approach that’s helped us grow year after year, and helped our students and clients do the same, even with zero tech background.

This is all about the special way our chatbots work, a method we call Hybrid AI. And to help me explain it, I’ve brought on the guy who helped create it, my co-founder, the one and only Nic Frachon.

Nic Frachon:
Thanks, Matt! We get a lot of people asking what makes our bots different—why they’re so engaging, entertaining, and why they actually convert, while so many bots out there are boring, frustrating, and barely more than glorified FAQs.

Matt:
Yeah. When we started working together back in 2017 at boardgames.com, things were tough. Financially, we were in rough shape. We didn’t even have money to pay Nic at first.

Nic:
True story. Day one, I had to bring my own chair to work.

Matt:
Yep. Assemble a chair, then assemble a bot. That was the start.

What we ended up creating was the Hybrid AI approach. And it really comes down to this:

What AI Does Best (and What It Doesn’t)

AI is brilliant. It can handle tons of data, answer almost any question, and learn patterns at scale. But when it comes to creating a personalized, emotionally intelligent experience, there are still some things humans do better, at least for now.

For example, I’ve written a lot of high-performing copy and generated millions of leads and sales. So when we build bots, we infuse them with copywriting and sales strategy to guide the user.

We do this through what we call a bot flow.

What’s a Bot Flow?

Imagine a decision tree, like a choose-your-own-adventure book. Users click buttons, follow paths, and get a tailored experience.

And creating these engaging, conversion-driven flows? That’s what we do better than anyone in the world.

Here’s a look at one of our many niche-specific Hybrid AI bots. This one is for a marketing agency focused on SEO.

Nic clicks Start Demo:

• The bot introduces itself and asks for a website URL
• User inputs: botbuilders.com
• Bot analyzes the site and responds:
  “You’re getting about 907 visits per day. You could be doing better, especially on Google.”

It then asks:

• “Do you want the good news or the bad news first?”
• “How do you feel about your traffic?” (User selects: I need way more.)
• “How familiar are you with SEO?” (User selects: I have zero clue.)

And finally:

• “Let’s book a free 30-minute consultation with Matt.”
• It sends the user to an external booking link or handles the appointment in Messenger

All of this is automated, seamless, and infused with smart, conversational flows.
